Chennai Schools Reopen After Being Closed For a Week Due to Cyclone Michaung

After remaining closed for a week due to the impact of Cyclone Michaung, schools in Chennai have reopened. Due to the heavy rains and flooding as a result of cyclone Michaung, several areas of Chennai experienced landslides, flooding, and other civic problems. The govt had announced the closure of schools as relief work was underway across the state.

Schools have been closed in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts since last week. The districts received widespread rains due to the impact of the cyclonic storm. Hence, schools, colleges and all educational institutions were ordered to remain closed. Schools in Puducherry, Karaikal, and Yanam regions were also shut on Dec 4 and 5.

Due to floods, the government had deployed machinery to clear the stagnant water and inundation. Schools have also been kept closed in Pallavaram, Tambaram, Vandalur, Thiruporur, Chengalpattu, and Thirukazhukundram.

The Tamil Nadu board half-yearly exams too were postponed by the state government due to the heavy rains. The exam was scheduled to begin on December 7 and end on December 22. Now it will commence on December 11. The directorate will conduct exams for classes 11 and 12 in two shifts — from 9:45 am to 12:45 pm and from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm.

The School Education Department has declared the revised timetable as well. Exams for classes 6 to 12 will now be held from December 13 to 22. The MK Stalin-led government has also allocated Rs 1.90 crore for cleaning the premises of the schools in Chennai and several other districts that were affected by the cyclonic storm, reported India Today. Over 800 medical camps have been organised for the affected districts, Health Minister Ma Subramanian said. The govt collaborated with seven private hospitals as well.
