Heavy Rainfall, Thunderstorm Likely in Southern States Next Week | Check Weather Updates
Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty winds is likely to occur over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala from November 14 to 16 and over Andhra Pradesh between November 13 and 15

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu and other adjoining southern states till November 16.

Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty winds is likely to occur over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala from November 14 to 16 and over Andhra Pradesh between November 13 and 15.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) said a cyclonic circulation, which lies over the Gulf of Thailand, is likely to emerge into Andaman Sea on November November 13. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the Southeast Bay of Bengal around November 14. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a Depression over Central and adjoining South Bay of Bengal around November 16.

Weather Updates of South India

  • Thunderstorms and lightning/gusty winds are likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Kerala during November 14-16 and over Andhra Pradesh during November 13-15.
  • Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry on November 14-15 and over Kerala on November 15-16.
  • Light/moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is very likely over Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the next 7 days.
  • As per the weather department, Ramanathapuram district’s Thangachimadam recorded 15 cm of rain, followed by Mandapam which recorded 14 cm of rainfall, Thirthala which observed 11cm and Pambam which recorded 8 cm of rainfall. 
  • On Thursday morning severe rainfall lashed Tamil Nadu. Visuals showed roads getting blocked in Coimbatore as landslide hit the Kunjappa-Panai area. Educational institutions in Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Madurai, Theni, Dinidigul, and a few taluks in Nilgiris were shut for a day.
  • Owing to continuous rains, landslides were reported at about five places on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway line, leading to the cancellation of the mountain train service. A landslide occurred at Kotagiri, which affected the road traffic and resulted to a traffic diversion via Coonoor to Mettupalayam.
  • On November 7, the IMD issued an orange alert in Kerala’s Ernakulam and Palakkad districts and yellow alerts in nine districts of the state.
  • Heavy rains in Kerala on November 5 caused landslides in some parts of the high range Idukki district, resulting in the loss of one life.
  • Due to bad weather forecast on November 4 and 5, schools in nine districts — Chennai, Kanyakumari, Tenkasi, Theni, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Dindigul, Sivagangai, and Nellai — were temporarily shut for a day.
  • According to local reports, the heavy rainfall has caused issues in several areas in the southern state, such as Pasupathipalayam and Tadavalaga, where waterlogging on main roads has created difficulties for commuters.
  • On November 6, heavy rain lashed Bengaluru, which led to several roads getting waterlogged. Some underpasses were also flooded with knee-deep water. Several areas, including Malleswaram, Shantinagar, Mysore Bank, and Town Hall witnessed heavy downpours
