Schools will remain closed in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpet, Thiruvallur districts tomorrow. The Odisha govt too has announced holiday for educational institutes tomorrow

Due to cyclone ‘Michaung’, schools in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu will remain closed on December 6. Schools in these districts have been shut on December 4 and 5. It will also be closed tomorrow. Landfall of cyclone Michaung is expected to occur tomorrow before 1:30 pm following which it will curve and move towards land, Mohsen Shahedi, NDRF DIG Ops said.

Cyclonic storm Michaung is expected to cross the coast in Andhra Pradesh tomorrow, bringing in heavy rainfall in Chennai and Puducherry. Transport services took a hit in Chennai with several trains and flights being cancelled. Many parts of Chennai and Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Tiruvallur districts have been flooded even as the government machinery was deployed to clear the stagnant water and inundation.

Further, all the primary, upper primary, high schools and Anganwadi centres in Odisha will remain closed on December 6 due to possible heavy rainfall, the Office of the Collector and District Magistrate, Gajapati said.

In the last 24 hours, till 8.30 am today, Perungudi in Chennai received 29 cm rainfall, Avadi in Tiruvallur district recorded 28 cm rainfall, and Mamallapuram in Chengalpet received 22 cm rainfall. The weather office said the four districts are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds today.

The cyclonic storm which is centered over the West Central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining North Tamil Nadu coasts moved northwestwards during the last six hours. “It is likely to move nearly northwards and close to south Andhra Pradesh coast and a cross between Nellore and Machilipatnam (AP) during the forenoon of December 5 as a Severe Cyclonic Storm at a speed of 90 to 100 KMPH,” the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
