‘None Of Us Are Safe Now’: Protesting Wrestlers Disappointed With Brij Bhushan’s Aide Winning WFI Polls
"The person who won the elections of WFI is an aide of Brij Bhushan. I suspect that they will now save him from the case as well but I have faith in our courts and hope he will be punished by law," Bajrang Punia said

After a close aide of the former chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, who is facing allegations of sexual assault, was elected the new president of the wrestling body, wrestlers expressed their disappointment.

Sanjay Singh won 40 out of 47 votes defeating Anita Sheoran, a Commonwealth Games gold medallist who had the full support of top wrestlers who had staged protests against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over sexual harassment allegations.

Here’s what wrestlers said on appointment of Sanjay Singh as New WFI Chief-

  • “Whatever awards I have won for the country, I have won with your blessings, I will always be grateful to all you countrymen. Goodbye to wrestling,” Malikkh later said in an X post.

  • “We are really sad that even after fighting such a long battle we have not been able to get justice. I do not know how is justice given in this country. We tried everything from closed rooms to the streets we tried everything,” said Vinesh Phogat.
  • On Sakshee Malikkh’s remarks regarding quitting wrestling, former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh said, “I have nothing to do with this…”
