Rule Change: Five Penalty Runs and Dead Ball for Unfair Movement in Indian Domestic Competitions
A host of changes have been been made to the playing condition ahead of the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy.

The BCCI has made several tweaks to playing conditions for its various domestic competitions some of which have already been implemented in tournaments like Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Among the several changes to be implemented in India’s top-flight red-ball competition is the one penalising a team for unfair movement from any of their fielder ones the ball comes into play.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, the batting team in such a scenario of unfair movement will be awarded five penalty runs and the ball will be declared dead.

“In the event of such unfair movement, either umpire shall call and signal Dead ball and inform the other umpire of the reason for doing so. The bowler’s end umpire shall then: ‘award the one-run penalty for Wide or No ball, if applicable’; ‘award 5 Penalty runs to the batting side; inform the captain of the fielding side of the reason for this action’; ‘inform the batters and, as soon as practicable, the captain of the batting side of what has occurred,'” reads the rule.

Among the several rule changes, the most talked about has been removing the limit of one bouncer in an over to two which was tried in the Mushtaq Ali Trophy and will also be implemented in the upcoming season of Indian Premier League.

The 2023-24 Ranji Tophy will get underway from January 5 with as many as 19 matches to be held in the first round across the country.

As many as 137 matches will be played during the season with the final scheduled to get underway from March 10.

Defending champions Saurashtra will begin their campaign against Jharkhand in an Elite Group A match to be played in Rajkot from Friday while last season’s runners-up Bengal take on Andhra in Visakhapatnam.
