The Indian mixed doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy pulled off a big upset on the first day of Swiss Open 2021 with a first-round win over second seeds Hafiz Faizal and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja of Indonesia on Tuesday. Ashwini-Satwik took just 38 minutes to beat Faizal-Widjaja 21-18, 21-10 to advance to the second round of the tournament. However, it was curtains for the other mixed doubles pair Pranaav Jerry Chopra-N Sikki Reddy as they were ousted by third seeded pair of Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith of England 21-18, 21-15 in 39 minutes.
The first game of Ashwini-Satwik’s match was like a see-saw. The Indian pair took a 5-2 early lead but then the Indonesian pair hit back to make it 6-5. From there on, it was like an exchange of a couple of points each between the two pairs. At 16-16, Ashwini-Sikki bag two points to make it 18-16 but the Indonesian pair won the next point. However, Ashwini-Sikki went on to win the next two points to bring up three game points. Faizal-Widjaja saved one game point but Ashwini-Satwik were able to take the set.
The second game started in a similar fashion but as the Indian pair led 5-4, they switched up a gear and started taking big leads. At the break, Ashwini-Satwik had an 11-6 lead. It was all Ashwini-Satwik after the break as the Indonesian pair struggled to string two points together while the Indian pair went on a rampage. Ashwini-Satwik easily pocketed the second game to win the match.
