Opinion | Bollywood to Builders: How Baba Siddique Dominated Mumbai’s Power Circles
A leader in the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Baba Siddique wielded power that transcended the traditional boundaries of politics

Baba Siddique, a familiar name in Mumbai’s political and social landscape, built his influence over decades, intertwining his political career with the worlds of Bollywood and real estate.

A leader in the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Siddique wielded power that transcended the traditional boundaries of politics. Siddique’s network and influence stretched far beyond his role as an MLA for the Bandra West constituency. His connections to the builder lobby and Bollywood’s biggest stars allowed him to maneuvre through Mumbai’s power structures.

However, a viral social media post by actor Kamal R. Khan (KRK) had placed Siddique under public scrutiny.

THE RISE

Born and raised in Mumbai’s Bandra, Siddique began his political career humbly. He was first elected as a corporator in the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) in the late 1980s. Siddique quickly established himself as a go-getter, someone with a talent for connecting with people and addressing local issues efficiently.

His transition to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, where he represented Bandra West for multiple terms, was seen as a natural progression for a politician with such deep ties to his constituency. He was known for solving local problems, from slum redevelopment to infrastructural improvements, and his popularity surged. However, it wasn’t just his political savvy nature that earned him influence.

Siddique’s charisma and ability to forge meaningful relationships propelled him to become an indispensable figure in other influential circles, most notably Bollywood and the real estate sector. These connections formed the bedrock of his public persona as a powerbroker who could navigate multiple worlds—politics, entertainment and business—with ease.

BOLLYWOOD CONNECT

Siddique’s association with Bollywood was legendary. His proximity to Bollywood superstars namely Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and other industry bigwigs added a layer of glamour to his political image. His annual iftar parties, which became star-studded affairs, were a testament to his influence. These events turned into a melting pot of politics and entertainment, where deals were sealed, and alliances were strengthened.

Siddique’s friendship with Salman Khan, in particular, became a focal point of his public life. The two were often seen together, and Siddique was quick to offer his support whenever the actor faced legal issues or controversy. In many ways, Siddique’s proximity to Bollywood royalty helped amplify his stature, making him not just a politician, but a gatekeeper to Mumbai’s glamorous elite.

In a city like Mumbai, where Bollywood holds as much sway as political power, Siddique’s ability to maintain strong ties with the film industry gave him leverage. He became a trusted ally for those seeking to navigate the legal and political hurdles that frequently come with high-profile stardom.

BUILDER LOBBY

As Bandra West developed into one of Mumbai’s prime real estate zones, Siddique’s influence over the city’s builder lobby grew significantly. Real estate developers often turned to politicians to help navigate the complex approval processes required for building projects, and Siddique’s position as a key MLA in Bandra made him an essential ally.

Siddique was able to facilitate approvals for projects, negotiate disputes between developers and local authorities, and ensure that construction efforts aligned with broader urban development goals.

CONTROVERSY

Siddique’s deep involvement in Mumbai’s real estate industry, however, wasn’t without its share of controversy.

There were whispers of Siddique’s involvement in questionable land deals, although he was never been directly implicated in any scandal. Allegations of leveraging political power for personal financial gain were raised, but they remained unproven. His association with the builder lobby, while a source of power, was often been viewed with suspicion by critics who claimed that such ties give too much influence to developers at the expense of ordinary citizens.

Siddique had recently found himself in the midst of a controversy. A post by Kamal R. Khan (KRK) accused Siddique of involvement in shady dealings within the builder lobby. The post, laden with unverified allegations, took the internet by storm, sparking heated debates on Twitter, Instagram and other platforms. Despite the fact that the police did not verify the accusations, the post continues to circulate, fanning the flames of controversy.

Siddique’s camp categorically denied the accusations, dismissing them as baseless. For Siddique, this represented a new kind of challenge—one where his reputation was at the mercy of online speculation and rapidly spreading misinformation.

In his death, the city has lost a politician who could be a man of the people and a figure of influence in Mumbai’s most elite circles.
