KE Kanthesh, the son of expelled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister KS Eshwarappa, has obtained a stay order from the Bengaluru court preventing 50 media houses from publishing any kind of defamatory text or video clips on him.
The development came days after the sex tape controversy involving JD(S) leader and Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna came to light, leading the Karnataka government to set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter.
Kanthesh, earlier on April 26, filed a petition to the 6th city civil court and sessions court of Bengaluru to impose a ban on media disseminating any defamatory content against him. Following this, the court issued an interim restraining order on Tuesday, prohibiting the broadcast of any material deemed defamatory, which can cause damage to Kanthesh’s reputation amid the Lok Sabha elections.
The court’s order came after advocate M Vinod Kumar representing Kanthesh said, “Our main aim is to file a petition in court to prevent any kind of dishonourable news story against my client.”
“An unknown person called my client four days ago and sent a morphed video of my client and a woman. He pressed him to pay money. He even threatened that the video clips would be given to the media houses, and his (Kanthesh) reputation would be spoiled if the amount was not paid. We approached the court to safeguard the interests of the client and, moreover, to protect his reputation,” Hindustan Times quoted him as saying.
He further informed that his client will file a police complaint against the unknown blackmailer soon.
The Sex Tape Scandal
The political situation in Karnataka after allegations of sexual assault were levelled against Karnataka MP Prajwal Revanna over the release of videos that allegedly showed him sexually assaulting multiple women. Following this, the JD(S) on April 30 suspended the Hassan MP over the allegations against him.
Prajwal Revanna is an incumbent Lok Sabha MP from Hassan Constituency and is the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda.
Meanwhile, the Congress-led Karnataka government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the matter, which asked the Hassan MP and his father to appear before it within 24 hours. Prajwal Revanna left for Germany on April 27 shortly after the videos emerged online.
Failing to appear before it, the SIT issued a lookout notice against incumbent JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna on Thursday.
