Kannur: The previous CPI(M)-led LDF government on Saturday came in for praise from an unexpected quarter with senior Congress leader and Defence Minister A K Antony saying there was "hundred per cent" cooperation from the state on matters of development.
"Though we fought politically, when (issues of) matter of development of the state came, there was hundred per cent cooperation," he said, lauding the previous LDF Government at a function.
Complimenting the former Kerala Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem, he said as a result of the cooperation by Kareem, six defence projects were started in the state including units of Hindustan Aeronautics, Bharat Earth Movers limited, Bharat Electronics Limited and Brahmos besides the National Institute for Research and Development in Defence Shipbuilding (NIRDESH) at Kozhikode.
"If such cooperation was extended, not only defence projects but even public sector institutions could be brought to Kerala," Antony said.
"Political affiliations should be kept away in the matter of development of the state, which would improve the welfare of the people and bring relief to the unemployment problem being faced in our state," he said.
Antony urged cooperation from ruling and opposition parties, business community and the people to make "Kerala a destination with regard to development" in the country.
Congress-led UDF had managed to wrest power from the LDF with a wafer-thin majority of two seats in the 140-member Assembly, in the closest poll battle in the state in three decades.
