Cricketer-turned-politician booked for distributing pamphlets to voters.

Lucknow: Former captain of the Indian cricket team and Congress candidate for the Moradabad Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh Mohammad Azharuddin has been booked for violating the model code of conduct, an official said Saturday.

"A case has been registered against Azharuddin after he distributed election pamphlets, which did not bear the name and address of publisher and printer, to voters in Badhapur village in Bijnore district May 7," additional superintendent of police R K Raghuvanshi said.

The case was registered late on Friday at the Nageena Dehat police station in Bijnore, he added.

As per the model code of conduct, candidates and their supporters can only distribute those pamphlets, handbills and posters that carry name and address of printer and publisher, so a check can be maintained on political parties, candidates and supporters incurring unauthorised election expenditure, police said.

Bijnore is some 350 km from Lucknow.
