Congress, NC Walk Out of J&K Assembly Over Sainik Colony Row

Srinagar: The row over an exclusive Sainik Colony and separate settlements for Kashmir Pandits in the Valley led to unruly scenes in the J&K Assembly Wednesday morning.

National Conference and Congress MLAs disrupted the Governor's address to the Joint session of the J&K Legislature.

The issues raised to target the Mehbooba Mufti led PDP government included the Handwara killings that occurred in April, and the prevailing law and order situation in the state. Independent legislator Engineer Rasheed was seen holding up a poster inside the Assembly seeking a judicial probe in the Handwara police firing that killed five civilians.

The civilians were reportedly killed in April during a public protest over an alleged molestation bid by Army personnel.

J&K government spokesman and Minister of Education Naeem Akhtar on May 19 had categorically said that the proposal over Kashmiri Pandit colonies is “out of question" as the prime motive of the government is to “make land available where everyone can live. There is no question of an exclusive colony."
