Srinagar: An Election Commission team is in Srinagar on Saturday to decide on the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The Commission members will meet stakeholders ahead of the polls in the state.
The ruling National Conference has said that polls should be deferred till next year in light of the devastation caused by the recent floods that claimed over 250 lives and left behind large scale destruction.
Opposition Peoples Democratic Party was for holding the polls as per schedule.
"Time is not ripe for holding elections as the atmosphere is not congenial due to devastation caused by floods and the trauma and shock people are in," a three-member NC delegation led by party General Secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar told deputy Election Commissioner Vinod Zutshi.
While seeking elections as per schedule, PDP called for shortening the process by holding the polls in lesser phases than earlier.
