New Delhi: In an extremely insensitive remark, Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh has claimed that farmers are committing suicides due to failed love affairs. His remarks come at a time when hundreds of farmers caught in debt trap have ended their lives.
He said that failed love affairs is one of the several other reasons due to which farmers are committing suicides.
The Agriculture Minister listed the reasons for suicide in a reply to Rajya Sabha. He in fact quoted national crime research bureau records in his reply.
His reply has invoked angry reactions from opposition parties. The Opposition leaders are protesting against the minister's statement. Janata Dal United (JDU) MP KC Tyagi is planning to move a privilege motion against him.
Reacting to this, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi said, "I advise the Prime Minister to advise his ministers to visit their houses. This is an anti-farmer government."
