Inks, slaps and shoes: How Arvind Kejriwal has been attacked in the past

Delhi Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has frequently been the target of attacks ever since he entered public life. On Friday a man, who identified himself as a member of a breakaway faction of Aam Aadmi Party threw a shoe at Kejriwal while he was addressing a press conference inside the Secretariat.

The man shouted something about a sting operation on a CNG scam before he hurled the shoe which fell on the table in front of Kejriwal. The attacker was whisked away by Secretariat officials before being detained by police.

The man, identified as Ved Sharma, claimed he was from Aam Aadmi Sena, a breakaway faction of AAP.

This is the third attack in 2016 on Kejriwal, who now has a Z plus category security. Even earlier he has been the target of attacks by people politically opposed to him.

November 2013

While AAP was holding a press conference in Delhi, a man, who claimed to be a supporter of anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare, attacked Kejriwal with black ink. Nachiketa Vaghrekar, who claimed to be the general secretary of the Ahmednagar unit of the BJP in Maharashtra threw ink at Kejriwal and other AAP leaders.

March 2014

A similar attack took place in March 2014, when Arvind Kejriwal was campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections in Varanasi, some unidentified people threw ink at him. The agitated people even threw eggs at the open vehicle in which Kejriwal was travelling.

2014 Delhi Assembly Elections

Apart from ink attacks, Arvind Kejriwal has also been heckled and attacked physically. During the 2014 Delhi Assembly election campaign, he was attacked during his roadshow in south Delhi’s Dakshinpuri area. While Kejriwal was shaking hands with his supporters, a person punched him on his back and even tried to slap him.

April 2014

Four days after Dakshinpuri incident, Kejriwal was attacked again during his road show in Sultanpuri area of Delhi. This time an auto driver, Lali, slapped him twice after garlanding him.

January 2016

A woman identified as Bhavna Arora attacked Kejriwal with ink alleging a CNG scam in Delhi. This was the first attack on Kejriwal since he became the Chief Minister of Delhi.

March 2016

A mob pelted his vehicle with stones and broke its windscreen at Hassanpur village in Punjab. Kejriwal, who was in the front seat next to the driver, escaped without injury though the shattered glass fell on him.
