Jayalalithaa in her party manifesto promised to scrap the Sethu project.

Chennai: Coming down heavily on All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) chief Jayalalithaa for her party manifesto promising to scrap the Sethusamudram project, DMK president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said such a move would only help Sri Lanka.

“If the project is through, the Sri Lankan government might be deprived of its revenue earned from shipping sector,” he said launching DMK's Lok Sabha poll campaign in Chennai.

He said the scheme, which was considered by the AIADMK as a good one in 2001 and 2004, “has become bad now”.

“Who gave Jayalalithaa the power to propose to scrap a scheme, which is beneficial to the state and will lead to economic prosperity of the backward southern districts?” he asked.

Karunanidhi's poser came in an apparent bid to bring out division between AIADMK and its poll partners Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and the Left parties, who were in favour of the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal project.

Leaders of DMK-led front partners, including Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol Thirumavalan and DK president K Veeramani asked what was the response by the MDMK, PMK and Left parties to Jayalalithaa's proposal.

AIADMK, in its manifesto, had promised to scrap the Rs 2400 crore project citing various reasons including religious emotions (Ramasethu) and threat to marine life.

Karunanidhi said the people of the state should nip in the bud itself any attempt to 'destroy' the project.
