THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The number of ministerial aspirants within the Congress has become a daunting task for the KPCC leadership to resolve. Other than the caste equations, the Cabinet berths are certainly going to be divided based on the group equations. With a jumbo list of aspirants, Chief Minister designate Oommen Chandy accompanied by KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala will be leaving for New Delhi on Thursday to get the final clearance from the party high command.
If the Congress is getting 10 Cabinet berths inclusive of the Chief Minister, the unified ‘I’ group has already staked claim for five. The ‘A’ group has rejected this proposal as it wants the supremacy in the government as it has more numbers in the parliamentary party. The probables from the ‘I’ group are G Karthikeyan, V D Satheeshan, A P Anilkumar, Hibi Eden, Adoor Prakash and V S Shivkumar.
But their chances depend on the caste equations and the nominees getting the final nod from the ‘A’ group. The probables from the ‘A’ group are Aryadan Mohammad, K C Joseph, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, Dominic Presentation, N Sakthan, P C Vishnunath and K Babu. K Muraleedharan is also a probable contender for the Cabinet berth.
If the party high command insists on a woman then P K Jayalakshmi who has won from Mananthavadi would get the nod. But the real problem comes for some aspirants in some other ways. The KPCC leadership feels that the UDF ministry cannot be more Christian dominated.
Apart from Oommen Chandy, two from Mani’s Kerala Congress and Shibu Baby John already represent this community. So from both ‘I’ or ‘A’ groups only one more Christian is likely to get a nod. Dominic Presentation might lose the chance as Shibu Baby John will be representing his community. N Sakthan also might lose if Hibi Eden is given the chance.
From the Ezhava community, either K Babu or Adoor Prakash will get the nod. From the Nair community G Karthikeyan, V D Satheeshan, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, K Muraleedharan and P C Vishnunath are the contenders. From the SC/ST category, A P Anil Kumar and P K Jayalakshmi are the two front-runners.
