With West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee set to file her nomination for the assembly elections from Nandigram in East Midnapore on March 11, the ruling Trinamool Congress has started a house-hunt for her in the district.
The aim is to find a house where Banerjee could stay put for the next one month and fight the poll battle. “Our party leaders have checked a number of houses in Nandigram where Banerjee could stay over the next month and fight the elections. We have already rented a few houses where TMC leaders coming from Kolkata could stay,” Sheikh Sufiyan, a TMC leader from East Midnapore, was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
Banerjee had played a masterstroke in January when she announced a contest from Nandigram as well as Bhowanipur seats in the upcoming assembly polls. Then, addressing a huge public rally at Tekhali in Nandigram, Mamata, had said, “Nandigram is close to my heart. I can forget my name but I cannot forget Nandigram. Considering the emotional attachment I have with the people of Nandigram, today I am announcing that I wish to contest the upcoming poll from Nandigram.”
“I would like to request my state president Subrata Bakshi to consider my name as the candidate from Nandigram in 2021 state polls. Nandigram is lucky for me. I will not neglect the Bhawanipur seat also. I promise to the people of Bhawanipur that I will give a good candidate there,” she had said.
Nandigram is considered as a strong bastion of rebel TMC leader Suvendu Adhikari (now in BJP) and Mamata’s announcement to contest from this region is being seen as her direct challenge to the Adhikari family.
Elections will be held in West Bengal in eight phases starting March 27. Elections for the Nandigram seat will take place in the second phase on April 1.
