Bangalore: In a Legislature Party meeting of the Karnataka BJP MLAs on Tuesday, many were of the view that the prospects of the party would improve in the next general elections if Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is projected as the party's prime minister candidate. This comes a day after there were reports that BJP president Rajnath Singh has initiated talks with top party leaders to appoint Modi as the campaign committee chairman of the party for the next general elections.
It seems the BJP has gone into damage control mode after party's veteran leader LK Advani rated Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan higher than Modi in their achievements in their respective states. "Gujarat was a healthy state when Modiji became CM. He improved the state. But here Shivrajji has achieved a complete turnaround, transforming a 'bimaru' state into a healthy state that is counted internationally," Advani had said during a convention of BJP organisers in Gwalior on Saturday.
While the Congress poked fun at the BJP over the issue saying there was a "civil war" in the Opposition party over the issue of its prime ministerial candidate, the BJP president on Monday tried to play down the matter saying Advani's words for Chouhan have been misinterpreted. Rajnath also called Modi as the most popular leader of India. "Advani's statement has been misinterpreted. There is no doubt that Modi is a popular leader in India. All our Chief Ministers have done a good job in dealing with socio-economic conditions in states," the BJP president said.
Earlier, IBNLive had reported that the Karnataka BJP has passed a resolution to make Narendra Modi as the party's PM candidate but the information was not correct. The Karnataka BJP has not passed any resolution.
