Chief Minister Nitish Kumar fulfilled his election promise by ordering a complete ban on liquor in Bihar on Tuesday. While country-made liquor was already prohibited in rural areas across the state since April 1, 2016, the Chief Minister on Tuesday announced that Foreign Made Indian Liquor, too, has been banned with immediate affect.
Nitish Kumar said that hotels and bars will not serve alcohol any more and no license will be given. However, he added that Army canteens will continue to sell alcohol. "Call for ban on liquor got a tremendous response especially from women and children. There was a huge clamour for a ban on liquor," he said.
Reacting to the ban, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Manoj Jha said, "This was a long term commitment to the people of Bihar. This meets the demands of the people of the state."
Welcoming the decision, the Bharatiya Janata Party, claimed that it was the persistence of its leaders that forced the CM to announce the ban.
After Gujarat, Nagaland and Mizoram, Bihar has now become the fourth state where liquor has been completely banned.
