New Delhi: As the nation observed the 47th anniversary of India's victory in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, the Congress lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for "insulting" the late PM Indira Gandhi on the occasion.
"Today is December 16. India's all powerful prime minister Indira Gandhi led India and we changed the geography of the world. Bangladesh, a nation, was born," UP Congress leader Pramod Tiwari told reporters at the Congress office in the national capital.
"I salute the Indian Army first of all. But Prime Minister Narendra Modi chose today, a day when the world salutes Indira ji, to insult her. He insulted her in her own constituency Raebareli. He should maintain some decorum. He should have spoken about her leadership and paid tribute to her," Tiwari said.
Taking a dig at the PM's rally in Raebareli, Tiwari said, "People started leaving Modi's rally in the middle, even as the Prime Minister was speaking. I congratulate the people of Raebareli for doing that. He even asked people for permission to speak. And Modi doesn't ask the people anything. He didn't ask before demonetisation, before making policies that worsened the farm crisis. It is clear that the people have bid him farewell."
"The road he (Modi) has inaugurated was made by Sonia ji. When will Modi inaugurate a project of his own? Work is being halted in Amethi and Rae Bareli on purpose,” he said.
In an apparent start to his campaign for 2019 general elections, Modi on Sunday launched a searing attack on the Gandhis home turf, saying the Congress party was "agitated" and telling "lies" as there was no "Quattrocchi uncle" or Christian Michel in BJP government's defence deals.
