New Delhi: Former Lok Sabha speaker PA Sangma has decided to file an election petition against Pranab Mukherjee's nomination in the presidential poll. Sangma will next week approach the Supreme Court asking that the presidential elections be declared null and void.
Sangma has alleged that Mukherjee held an office of profit when he filed his nomination for the presidential elections.
Sangma, who lost the presidential elections to Mukherjee, had been contemplating filing an election petition challenging Mukherjee's nomination.
The former Lok Sabha Speaker's team had alleged that Mukherjee was holding an office of profit as Chairman of the Indian Statistical Institute, as well as two other institutions, when he filed his nomination papers and his (Mukherjee's) resignation letter had forged signatures.
However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had backed Sangma in the presidential elections, had said that if he chose to challenge Mukherjee's nomination in the Supreme Court, it would be in his personal capacity.
The BJP had said that it had already welcomed Mukherjee as the 13th President of the country.
