New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party on Friday tried to downplay the controversy concerning Malviya Nagar MLA Somnath Bharti, who has been accused by his wife of domestic violence.
While Bharti claimed that the allegations against him were "politically motivated", the Aam Aadmi Party said that the matter would be resolved "internally by the family".
Meanwhile, sources said that Somnath Bharti tried to contact his wife but did not receive any response. Sources further said that the former Delhi law minister would seek an anticipatory bail if an FIR was lodged against him.
The Delhi Police is expected to issue a notice to the AAP MLA in connection with the domestic violence case. There is a different protocol on marital disputes, we will work as per the law. If needed then we will make the FIR, the protocols are very strong said Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi. Bassi also added that the incident highlights that women are in trouble in every section of the society.
Meanwhile, Somnath Bharti’s wife Lipika Mitra was reportedly taken for a medical examination of her injuries, which were allegedly inflicted upon her by the AAP MLA.
She has accused the politician of domestic violence. Earlier, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) issued a notice to the AAP Leader. It says Bharti's wife has also lodged a complaint about dowry and marriage under false promises. Somnath Bharti has refuted all allegations.
DCW has warned that if Bharti doesn't appear before the commission on the 26th of June, an FIR will be lodged. DCW says the wife had complained to the police in 2011 as well but at that time, the couple reached a compromise as their daughter was just 6 months old.
Opposition parties have also stepped up pressure with BJP and Congress workers protesting against Bharti.
