Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Government on Monday withdrew two defamation complaints filed against Chief Minister Jayalalitha by the previous DMK government.
The court had on April 25 issued summons to Jayalalithaa asking her to appear before it on June 21 in connection with the defamation complaints.
In the complaints, the government had accused her of allegedly issuing press statements which damaged and undermined the reputation of Karunanidhi (the then CM).
One of the complaints stated that Jayalalithaa had on April 14 issued a statement alleging that the state government had slashed daily allowance to be paid for central para- military personnel deployed for the April 13 state Assembly polls.
In another complaint it was stated that Jayalalitha had on April 13 made some statements "defaming" Karunanidhi and officials of Central and state governments alleging that the government had planned to unleash violence on the day of polling.
Principal Session Judge P Devadoss permitted the government to withdraw the complainants.
