UP: Murders, rapes, power cuts raise questions over state government
BSP chief Mayawati took on the SP government over the state of affairs and said that there was a complete 'jungle raj' in the state.

Lucknow: The bad news continues from Uttar Pradesh. After the mother of a rape victim was assaulted by the rapist in Etawah and two sisters were gangraped and hanged in Badaun, a minor was gangraped in Azamgarh. The incidents have sent shockwaves across the country and hit international headlines.

According to the police at least three men, including one policeman, have been arrested in connection with the Badaun incident. A constable was also detained for conspiring with the suspects and for dereliction of duty, authorities said, adding they were looking for one more suspect and one constable.

The victims' families had complained that the police had refused to help find the girls, aged 14 and 16, when they went missing.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh has instructed the state government to conduct a thorough probe into the ghastly incident.

Meanwhile, in Azamgarh, four men allegedly gangraped a minor girl in Saraimeer area. An FIR has been filed but no arrests have been made so far.

The incident took place on Thursday night when the four accused gangraped the girl in a nearby field, the police said. The accused have been identified as Mukesh, Arvind, Vikram and Durgesh.

The police said that the four accused fled the spot after the crime. Azamgarh is an important constituency as it is represented by Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Apart from rapes and murders, the Akhilesh Yadav government is also grappling with a major power crisis in the state. The long power cuts have plunged most parts of the state into darkness, raising serious questions over the efficiency of the government. The opposition has alleged that the areas which did not vote for the ruling SP were being 'punished' in this manner.

Power Minister Piyush Goel asked the Akhilesh government to rise above petty politics and ensure uninterrupted power supply.

"It's easy to blame others," Goyal said, referring to Akhilesh's statement that the Centre was not giving sufficient power to the state. "There is enough power available in the Exchange for the UP government to buy, just the way they bought it before elections. They can buy it now. I urge the Chief Minister of UP to stop making excuses. There is no shortage. Only one state-run plant has failed which should be restored in 24 hours," Goyal said.

A defiant Akhilesh, however, said UP could produce its own electricity. "UP is capable of producing electricity. We need coal as soon as possible. Without coal, we cannot do anything," he said.

Akhilesh had said in his statement on Thursday that he was taking "enough steps to normalise the power crisis in the state". "UP is only getting 4200 MW instead of 6002 MW from the Centre. The state should get enough amount of electricity from the Centre. Due to less supply of coal from Coal India, power crisis is growing in the state," he said.

Uttar Pradesh is presently reeling under power cuts that often last 10 hours or more. This has hit the ordinary citizens as well as the industry and agriculture.

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati took on the Samajwadi Party (SP) government over the state of affairs and said that it was complete jungle raj in the state. "Only the ruling party's constituencies have power. The rest of UP is suffering... The law and order situation in UP is deteriorating. There is jungle raj here," she said referring to the rapes and power cuts.
