Microsoft has released a dedicated app for its generative AI-powered service, Copilot, and in doing so, it joins the ranks of companies such as OpenAI that have a dedicated app for their respective generative AI chatbots. For those uninitiated, Microsoft Copilot, previously called Bing Chat, is powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4 and DALL-E 3, and until now, it was only available as a web-only experience or could be used inside the Bing app.
But now, users can head to the Google Play Store and download the dedicated Copilot app right away. Like the web version, it replies to users’ queries and generates images based on the text-based prompts you feed it. That means you can use it for a wide range of tasks, such as proofreading, making a diet plan based on your habits, creating a travel itinerary, and even generating high-quality images.
If you have used the ChatGPT app by OpenAI, you would feel right at home as it functions the same way. However, one notable difference is the fact that you can create images, which you can’t do with the free version of the ChatGPT app.
Also, this app release comes just a month after Bing Chat was rebranded as Copilot. Ergo, it makes sense for Microsoft to launch Copilot as a standalone experience instead of bundling it with the Bing app. To get started with the Copilot app, you don’t need to have a Microsoft account, and you can use the basic features of the app as is, but if you hope to create images from prompts, and ask detailed questions, you will need to sign in with a Microsoft account.
However, the app is currently available only on Android, and we don’t have information on when it will be launched on Apple iOS.
