Smartphone screens have been made of glass since its origin but all that could change in the coming years thanks to new materials being tested. Researchers have talked about using transparent wood which is said to be 10 times stronger than existing glass layers that are used for making smartphone screens. In fact, the experiment has been done for many years now which seems to have given them the confidence to talk about its value and quality.
But what is transparent wood? Is it something that already exists or have they created it? The researchers at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden and the University of Maryland (UTM) have done some changes to the materials of actual wood that has given them confidence about the quality of the possible glass alternative.
The teams used a scientific method to remove a glue-like substance from the wood which gives it a transparent finish. The resulting material is viewed as a great option instead of using glass and plastic for screen. Their tests also highlighted the apparent strength of the new material which is definitely a blessing for smartphone manufacturers.
Having said that, will the new material mimic the efficiency of glasses and work with the same level of fluidity as glasses, that’s something which will become closer to the availability of the new material when the brands feel the value of investing in transparent wood will give them high returns in the long run.
With the market moving to foldables, having screens made of transparent wood could actually be a blessing in disguise, as it makes the products a lot more durable. However, the only concern could be how using wood could be safe for the environment at a time when major global climate changes have impacted countries across the world.
