Sony’s PlayStation 5 has been available for over three years now, and as we approach the mid-lifespan of this console generation, speculation is building about whether Sony is going to replicate what it did with the PS4 generation—that is, launch a mid-cycle refresh in the form of a PS5 Pro, akin to the PS4 Pro that followed the PS4 in 2016.
Now, CNBC is reporting that it has obtained information from analysts suggesting that a “refreshed” version of the PS5 console is indeed launching this year.
Notably, this development follows Sony cutting its sales forecast for the PS5 as interest gradually wanes. It goes without saying that having a brand-new console refresh expected to be more powerful and fully ready to run the upcoming GTA 6 at high fidelity is something that would spark interest for many.
GTA 6 is currently set to launch in 2025, so from a sales point of view, it makes sense for Sony to have the best possible console ready for the mass market before what is expected to be a blockbuster launches.
Also, if the past is anything to go by, both Sony and Microsoft launched mid-cycle refreshes in the form of the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X, respectively, during the last console generation. Therefore, now could be the time that Sony repeats the same with the cost of the build coming down.
“There seems to be a broad consensus in the game industry that Sony is indeed preparing a launch of a PS5 Pro in the second half of 2024,” Serkan Toto, CEO, Kantan Games, told CNBC.
He added, “And Sony will want to make sure to have a great piece of hardware ready when GTA VI hits in 2025, a launch that will be a shot in the arm for the entire gaming industry.”
It will be interesting to see how the alleged PS5 Pro takes shape, how does it Sony position it in terms of price, and most importantly, how does Microsoft responds to it?
