This Phone Weighs Just Half as Others, But Would You Pay Over Rs 70000 for it?

The Carbon 1 Mark II didn’t quite get to pull off its party tricks the way phones of its kind have in the past. After advertising a June 2020 launch and being unveiled just before the Covid-19 pandemic gripped the world, the Carbon 1 Mark II has finally been launched in Europe. What, then, is the big deal about this smartphone from a seemingly unknown entity? As the makers state, the Carbon 1 Mark II weighs just about 125 grams – about 40 percent lesser than the average smartphone of today. It also measures only 6.3mm in thickness and claims to offer comparatively modern specs than such cosmetic innovation attempts seen before.

However, while all that is great, there is a major caveat – the Carbon 1 Mark II smartphone is pegged at a retail price of EUR 799, or just over Rs 70,000. You essentially pay the price for owning a super slim and light smartphone, in a world of composite plastic, metal and glass phones that have grown increasingly bulkier over time. While phone makers were all working towards producing super slim and light smartphones about six or seven years ago, the sheer focus of late has been on more cameras, bigger batteries and now 5G radios inside devices – things that have made phones heavy and bulky. The average smartphone of today measures about 9mm in thickness and weighs about 190-200 grams.

In terms of specifications, the Carbon 1 Mark II gives you a MediaTek Helio P90 SoC – not the best performer by any means, but acceptable for light task users. This is combined with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, a 6-inch AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 7 on top, a hybrid dual-SIM slot, a 16-megapixel dual rear camera setup, a 20-megapixel selfie shooter and a 3,000mAh battery – understandable, given the space constraints in the phone. None of these specifications look particularly out of fashion right now. However, once you consider the price tag that it comes at, you may think twice about spending all that money to save on a few grams and millimetres, instead of getting better gaming, photography, battery life and everything else in between.

Still, the Carbon 1 Mark II is delivering on its promise of a super lightweight smartphone thanks to what it calls a HyRECM body, which stands for Hybrid Radio-Enabled Composite Material. If this sounds like your gig, you can preorder the Carbon 1 Mark II in Europe for about Rs 70,000. It does not seem like the Carbon 1 Mark II would get a dedicated introduction to India, so if you really want this phone, you’ll likely have to go get it yourself – once Covid-19 restrictions ease out.
