India is looking forward to becoming a beggar-free nation by 2026. The Central government had identified certain cities for conducting a survey and relocating adults engaged in begging, especially women and children. The survey is currently being carried out in Bhopal. The administration has decided to make a profile of beggars. All the squares, intersections, crossroads, religious places, railway stations, bus stands, and other social places are being monitored. On the first day of the survey, the officials rescued more than 200 beggars at these locations. The maximum number of beggars belongs to the Govindpura division, as per the ongoing survey. Their count in this area has reached 130 so far.
Collector Kaushlendra Vikram Singh said in an interview that this survey will be conducted for three days. The survey will have the involvement of SDMs, Tehsildars and the Social Justice Department. After the survey, actions will be taken based on the findings to complete the housing of these people.
Measures will be taken for survey, identification, mobilisation, rehabilitation and livelihood to connect beggars to the mainstream of society. Tehsildars of Govindpura, Kolar, Berasia, Huzur, MP Nagar, City, and TT Nagar tehsils have been given the responsibility of surveying beggars. After the survey, children will be admitted to schools for a good education. Along with this, others will also be taught proper work and will be given employment. The funding for the implementation will be given by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in each district. Skill development education and employment will be the results which are expected to be achieved after the survey’s findings.
The Central government has identified 30 cities for the survey of beggars. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has joined hands with the district and local authorities to pinpoint the hotspots of beggars in the city. With an aim to become beggar-free by 2026, the officials have added many more names to the list of cities.
These cities are all known for their religious centres, historical significance and tourism. The implementation is being done under a subset scheme of ‘Support for Marginalised Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprises’ (SMILE). As per media reports, the survey has already been completed in Kozhikode, Madurai, Vijayawada and Mysuru.
