As per reports, the tombs were reused for burial for up to 900 years.

Human history is fascinating. Archaeologists often dig up the past and make interesting discoveries. They find fossils during their dig, which throws light into the creatures that lived ages ago. Now, imagine a group of archaeologists accidentally ending up discovering some shocking truth that will make your hair rise and give you goosebumps. In Egypt, archaeologists discovered 36 tombs, each containing 30 to 40 mummies. As per reports, the tombs were reused for burial for up to 900 years. These mummies were found in the city of Aswan, which in the historical period was an important trading place. Aswan is located on the eastern bank of the river Nile and was a hub for quarrying and the military, when it was founded more than 4,500 years ago.

As per Patrizia Piacentini, a researcher at the University of Milan, the burial site discovered extends about 2,70,000 feet. She further found that the site has ten terraces of ancient tombs that were arranged in tiers on the hillside. She stated that this could hint that the hillside was riddled with tombs of the citizens, thus many referring to it as the ‘City of the Dead’.

More than 300 tombs have been discovered from here till now, which left the archaeologists shocked. The findings from the site indicated a class differentiation at the burial practice. After excavation and thorough studies, it was found that those individuals who belonged to the elite class were buried in locations above the middle-class individuals.

Can you guess how old these tombs were? Well, reports claimed that the archaeologists dated these tombs back to 300 or 600 AD. If you turn the chapter of history pages, then you would know that it was the time for Persian dominance along with Roman rule and the Greek Ptolemaic dynasty influence. The experts found roofs of at least 10 tombs that were arranged by the former President of the Assembly of the League of Nations, Aga Khan III. Along with this, about 30 to 40 percent of the buried people died when they were quite young. They must have died as babies or young adults.
