It was election results day for Jammu and Kashmir, but for Omar Abdullah, the former chief minister, the Tuesday morning was no different. While people were glued to their television sets, figuring out early trends, the National Conference Vice-President went for his usual morning run in Srinagar,
In a post on X, he said, “Counting day 7K done. Last time around it didn’t end well for me personally. InshaAllah this time around it will be better”.
As trends solidified by 1 PM, Abdullah, who contested from Budgam and Ganderbal, was leading in both seats. Notably, the NC has always been a popular choice in Ganderbal, a seat his grandfather and father also represented.
He also wished his party associates as well as allies before the commencement of the counting process began.
Here’s wishing all my colleagues and allies the very best of luck for today. We fought the good fight & now, InshaAllah, the results will reflect that.— Omar Abdullah (@OmarAbdullah) October 8, 2024
On Monday evening, Abdullah shared a funny meme to illustrate how stressed he was over the results.
By this time tomorrow it will all be clear. Now if only I could go to sleep & wake up 24 hours later I’d be a happy person. Nerves!!!! pic.twitter.com/72pb0sFCCi— Omar Abdullah (@OmarAbdullah) October 7, 2024
Earlier on the counting day, when asked about early trends, the NC leader said that he would prefer to wait. He recalled how during the last Lok Sabha polls he was leading ahead when he was out for his morning jog. However, when he got home, things were no longer the same. “We will talk after lunch,” he added.
The National Conference-Congress alliance is leading 52 seats in Jammu and Kashmir, followed by the BJP in 27 seats, as per the latest trends. The PDP, which emerged as the single largest party in 2014, was leading only in two seats, while others led nine.
While PDP and BJP fought the polls separately, NC and Congress, partners of the INDIA coalition, were together.
The J&K assembly election was conducted in three phases September 18, September 25, and October 1.
