Sharon Norton, hailing from Port Edward, Durban, South Africa recently faced the most spine-chilling moment of her life. As per a report published in the Daily Star portal, she had heard some sounds in her kitchen and thought that a burglar had barged into her house. The 62-year-old braced herself to fight the intruder but couldn’t find him due to the power cuts in her residential area. Norton then pushed open the kitchen door and switched her torch only to discover a 16-foot-python in the kitchen. The massive reptile was ready to attack her and Norton, whacking the serpent hard with a heavy baking tray with no alternative left. Fortunately, the snake backed away.
Norton, a retired real-estate agent, shared her experience dealing with this unexpected intruder with Daily Star. She said,”These things can eat impala and bushbuck and | am only 5ft 2″ so if it had got hold of me in its jaws I don’t think I could have done anything to stop it from swallowing me whole!. Its head was moving fast and you don’t realise how quick they are. Give me a burglar any day!”.
Norton knew it had come for her Yorkshire terrier dogs. The retired estate agent used to have 15 dogs, but three other pythons had eaten four of them with 11 remaining. She said that this giant was coming in for the fifth dog and was as surprised to see her as she was. According to Norton, the python’s body was thicker than her thighs and it backed away between the fridge and the wall with its jaws open looking to strike at anything.
Norton then called a local snake catcher named Sarel van der Merwe, 58 who had been to her farm thrice. The catcher told her to sit tight and keep an eye on the serpent and that he would get to her in an hour. The snake catcher said that at 16 feet long, this Southern African Python was one of the biggest specimens he had ever been called out to and could easily have killed Norton.
