Footage of moments after a 15-year-old girl shot her mother dead and attempted to kill her stepfather in their house surfaced on the internet. The footage showed the teen, who was 14 years old then, sitting on a stool and using her mobile phone calmly moments after shots were fired in the house.
The footage was played in court during her murder trial in Mississippi. The girl had allegedly shot her mom inside their home on March 19. She turned down a 40-year plea deal and her legal team is pursuing an insanity defense.
The video showed the teen entering the living room and wandering in and out of the room for some moments before she disappeared from the camera frame and multiple shots were heard in the background. After the first shot, a woman was heard screaming, and then the room fell silent. Moments later the girl walked into the living room, casually sat on the stool and texted someone while her two dogs watched on.
According to a Law and Crime report, prosecutors have alleged that the teen allegedly used her mother’s phone to text her stepfather Heath to lure him home.
The teen’s mother, 40-year-old math teacher Ashley Smylie was fatally shot in the face.
According to police, when Heath returned home, his stepdaughter shot at him, hitting him once in the shoulder. Heath managed to take the gun from her before she could shoot him again, prompting her to flee the scene.
Police also alleged that after killing her mother, the teen texted one of her friends asking them to come over to the house due to an ’emergency.’ When the friend arrived, she allegedly asked her friend “if she had ever seen a dead body before” and led her to her mother’s body.
According to a Daily Mail report, the court further heard she had used marijuana up until at least the day prior to the incident. She had also been prescribed Lexapro and Zoloft – both medications for mood disorders.
The teen is charged with murder, attempted murder and evidence tampering, and faces a life sentence if found guilty.
