Meghan Markle has landed into a fresh controversy, this time over her relationship with Victoria Beckham, according to revelations made in a new book by celebrity biographer Tom Bower. Bower’s The House of Beckham details an incident where Markle reportedly reached out to fashion icon Victoria Beckham with requests for complimentary clothes and handbags.
This move allegedly drew the ire of Buckingham Palace, which intervened, citing royal protocol that forbids such requests. The book also claims that Markle failed to return a pair of Aquazzura shoes after a fashion photoshoot. Aquazzura is a luxury footwear brand and is frequently spotted on the feet of many celebrities.
The book explores the complex relationship between the actor and the Beckhams. Markle is known to have been close to the family and to Victoria Beckham. She also stayed at the Beckhams’ Beverly Hills residence.
Bower claims that a member of Victoria Beckham’s team offered Markle make-up and beauty tips during her time in London.
However, tensions reportedly surfaced between Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex and Victoria Beckham when the former suspected the latter of leaking stories to the media.
Prince Harry himself stepped in, ‘complaining’ to superstar, retired-footballer David Beckham. Victoria Beckham firmly denied any involvement and pointed the finger instead at a beautician, the book claims.
A Daily Mail report said that the former England international was “bloody furious” over accusations that his family leaked information about the Sussexes and there were indications that a reconciliation was ‘unlikely’.
The book also claims that tensions arose when Meghan Markle became increasingly sensitive to media scrutiny and envious of the Beckhams’ wealth and luxurious lifestyle.
The situation worsened when Markle reportedly snubbed the Beckhams at her 2018 wedding.
They were invited but excluded from a special dinner with celebrities like George Clooney, leaving Victoria Beckham feeling “insulted”, Bower’s book claims, further adding that Victoria Beckham appeared “stony-faced” in photos from Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding at St George’s Chapel in 2018.
Their relationship reportedly became “frosty,” and the Beckhams allegedly did not invite the Sussexes to their son Brooklyn Beckham’s lavish Palm Beach wedding to Nicola Peltz in 2022.
Despite the tensions, Meghan Markle continued to publicly support Victoria Beckham by wearing pieces from her fashion collection on multiple occasions, such as Christmas in 2018 and the Commonwealth Day Service in 2019.
