Donald Trump appeared to turn to women in his family for help this week at the Republican National Convention (RNC) as his daughter-in-law Lara Trump and granddaughter Kai Trump offered a humanising portrait of the Republican who is accused of being sexist by his detractors on Tuesday.
Both women from Trump’s family offered to Republicans gathered at the convention, that anointed him as presidential nominee and JD Vance as his running mate, a glimpse of “the Donald Trump that I know".
Kai painted a portrait of a doting grandfather.
“On Saturday, I was shocked when I heard that he had been shot. And I just wanted to know if he was OK. It was heartbreaking that someone would do that to another person. A lot of people have put my grandpa through hell, and he’s still standing," Kai said.
“To me, he’s just a normal grandpa. He gives us candy and soda when our parents aren’t looking. He always wants to know how we are doing in school. When I made the honour roll, he printed it out to show his friends how proud he was of me," she further added.
“Grandpa, you are such an inspiration. And I love you. The media makes my grandpa seem like a different person, but I know him for who he is. He’s very caring and loving. He truly wants the best for this country, and he will fight every single day to make America great again," Kai said, as Donald Trump looked with an expression of joy and pride.
Trump has demonised immigrants, mocked the LGBTQ community and was found liable by a jury of sexually abusing a woman in the 1990s — which he still denies.
He appeared to soften those edges by turning to women – both within and outside his family – for help.
His daughter-in-law Lara Trump said Donald Trump is a supportive father-in-law who encouraged her to take a job as a Fox News commentator.
Model and rapper Amber Rose said the ex-president doesn’t care “if you’re Black, white, gay or straight."
On Wednesday it was Kellyanne Conway who insisted that “in Donald Trump’s" Republican Party “everyone is welcome." And delegates heard from one of his granddaughters, Kai Trump, who spoke glowingly of her grandfather.
If successful, the effort could boost his standing with suburban women, Blacks and Hispanics — key groups that can flip states Biden won narrowly in 2020.
