Residents of Long Island were told to expect major delays as several major roads in Nassau County will remain closed for the high-profile India-Pakistan cricket match on Sunday. Officials, according to the New York Post, said that beachgoers and residents must plan accordingly for the match that will take place at Eisenhower Park.
The US newspaper dubbed the fixture as “the biggest match of the ICC Cricket T20 Men’s World Cup in the US”.
The newspaper in its report said that traffic is expected to be disrupted all day and that several nearby roadways will remain closed for the match.
The high-profile match, celebrated as one of the most intense rivalries in sports, could lead to increased traffic delays due to enhanced security.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) said that the tournament and its related events in New York could be viewed by extremists as an opportunity to cause violence.
“Recent pro-ISIS propaganda which specifically referenced the upcoming India-Pakistan match at this major event … raises concerns and reinforces the need for heightened vigilance” among security partners, the bulletin said.
Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder stated that the World Cup faced a threat linked to ISIS-K in April, along with more specific threats concerning the India versus Pakistan match.
Nassau County officials stated that all measures, including increased patrols and inter-departmental security details, are in place to ensure the safe conduct of the high-profile ICC Men’s T20 World Cup match between India and Pakistan on Sunday at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, according to a separate report by the Hindu.
Cricket World Cup matches between India and Pakistan rank among the most-watched sporting events globally. The last encounter between the two teams in T20 cricket happened in 2022. Governor Kathy Hochul announced that New York State Police have been instructed to enhance enforcement presence and security for the tournament.
Nassau County police have issued a traffic advisory, informing residents of multiple road closures during the tournament.
Park Boulevard (Eisenhower Park) will be closed in both directions from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The park will also be off-limits to the public during this time.
Merrick Avenue, from Hempstead Turnpike to Charles Lindbergh Boulevard, will be closed from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Only local traffic will be permitted from Stewart Avenue southbound to Charles Lindbergh Boulevard during this period.
Charles Lindbergh Boulevard’s eastbound side will be closed from Earle Ovington Boulevard from 4:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., while the westbound side will remain open all day from the Meadowbrook State Parkway ramp.
James Doolittle Boulevard will be closed at Charles Lindbergh Boulevard from the Marriott main entrance from 4:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Both Hempstead Turnpike and Earle Ovington Boulevard will remain open in both directions.
Officials are advising attendees to park at the Nassau Coliseum to use shuttle buses to reach the tournament.
Eight matches will be held at the 34,000-seat Long Island stadium.
