Sheikh Rehana has accompanied Sheikh Hasina to India after fleeing Bangladesh, as the latter is likely seeking asylum in United Kingdom

As Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled amid protests, she was accompanied by her sister Sheikh Rehana Siddiq. Rehana is the younger daughter of ‘father of Bangladesh’ Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Fazilatun Necha Mujib and the younger sister of Sheikh Hasina.

Sheikh Rehana’s daughter Tulip Siddiq is a member of the British Parliament for the Labor Party.

  • Rehana was born on September 13, 1955 in Tungipara, Gopalganj.
  • Assassins killed Rahman and his family on August 15, 1975. However, a few days before the murder, Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana went to Germany to visit Hasina’s husband M. A. Wazed Miah in Karlsruhe. As a result, the duo survived. The sisters then took political asylum in India. Sheikh Rehana moved to London with her family.
  • Hasina returned to Bangladesh in 1981 and took the helm of Awami League.
  • Rehana, although not active in politics, has supported the spirit of liberation war and the movement.
  • She is seen by her sister’s side during every crisis of Awami League. Sheikh Rehana played a leading role in forming public opinion abroad to demand justice for their father’s murder.

  • Rehana’s husband is Professor Shafique Ahmed Siddiq. The couple has three sons and daughters.

  • The youngest daughter Azmina Siddiq is the global risk analysis editor at Control Risks in London.
