India emerging as global leader: Cameron
Britain's Opposition Conservative Party leader David Cameron has said India commands a position at the top table.

London: Advocating greater engagement with India, leader of Britain's Opposition Conservative Party David Cameron has said the country commands a position at the 'top table' through its political and economic successes.

"The world's centre of gravity is moving towards the Asian and Pacific economies. For most of the last half-a-century, we in the West have assumed that we set the pace and we set the global agenda."

"Now we must wake up to a new reality. We have to share global leadership with India and with China," Cameron wrote in an article published in The Guardian newspaper on Tuesday.

India, he said, "has established beyond argument, through its economic and political success, its right to a seat at the top table."

Cameron, who is currently on a four-day visit to India, said Britain now had to shift its political focus towards emerging Asian economies.

"For too long, politics in this country has been obsessed with Europe and America. These relationships are, and will continue to be, vital."

"But serious and responsible leadership in the 21st century means engaging with far greater energy in the parts of the world where Britain's strategic interests will increasingly lie," he wrote.

George Osborne, the Shadow Chancellor, who is accompanying Cameron, wrote in The Times on Tuesday, saying Britain must be quick to grab the opportunities India presents now.
