'...Gives Chance to a Newcomer': Kuldeep Yadav Hints India May Play a Debutant in Rajkot Test
Sarfaraz Khan was called-up ahead of the 2nd Test after India were hit by injuries to Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul.

The Indian cricket team is missing a few of their first-choice Test stars in the ongoing series against England at home. While Virat Kohli is already out of the entire series, Mohammed Shami is also unlikely to play any role.

Additionally, the squad is also dealing with fitness concerns to KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja. While Jadeja is making a steady recovery from a hamstring issue, Rahul’s injury is seemingly more serious than anticipated.

Rahul is not 100 per cent match fit and hence will sit out from the third Test. India have not picked out-of-form Shreyas Iyer for the crucial tie meaning there’s vacancy in the middle-order.

Rajat Patidar was given his Test debut in Vizag, replacing injured Rahul. And with Rahul not available with Iyer dropped, there’s another spot up for grabs.

The Indian team management has called-up Devdutt Padikkal as Rahul’s replacement while there’s another uncapped batter waiting in the squad in Sarfaraz Khan.

“…gives a chance to a newcomer who can get the opportunity. I am sure they have done really well in domestic cricket and it is their time to show what they have got. It is good for Indian cricket and for the individuals as well,” Kuldeep said on India being depleted for the 3rd Test starting February 15.

India called-up Washington Sundar along with the uncapped duo of Sarfaraz and Saurabh Kumar ahead of the 2nd Test following injuries to Jadeja and Rahul.

However, with Jadeja back in the squad, Saurabh wasn’t picked in the squad for the remaining three matches but Sarfaraz and Sundar were included.

Kuldeep also hinted Jadeja could feature in India’s playing XI for the Rajkot Test.

“He is doing his routine (work). He did one session yesterday (Monday) and I think he is available,” he said.

The five-match Test series between India and England is currently locked at one-all.
