Troy Deeney’s attempt to change Forest Green Rovers’ fortunes by bringing on board ex-England duo of Jermain Defoe and John Terry has not been able to avoid his sacking. Just after six matches being in charge of Forest Green, Deeney was sacked.
Deeney, who was handling his maiden managerial duties, was just 29 days into the job. Forest Green management decided to part ways with Deeney after he failed to even register a single win out of his six games in charge. The Situation got worse after Deeney had publicly criticised his players following a defeat at home to Harrogate on Saturday, January 13. Forest Green are currently struggling at the bottom of League Two standings.
A report published by The Telegraph claimed that Deeney had wanted to rope in former England players like Defoe and Terry for certain managerial roles. The Telegraph article went on to suggest that Deeney had disclosed his plans of bringing in Defoe to execute a shooting clinic and Terry to conduct a defenders’ session.
Terry had previously been assistant to Dean Smith at both Aston Villa and Leicester City. Defoe, on the other hand, is the under-18s coach in the academy of former side Tottenham Hotspur.
Deeney had joined Forest Green as a player-coach back in August. He had even netted four goals in 18 appearances during his time on the pitch for Forest Green. Though, the 35-year-old failed to kick off his managerial stint on a fruitful note. Deeney was sacked after remaining winless in five league matches.
“These are decisions nobody likes to make, but we have acted this way to give FGR the best possible chance of improving results and climbing the league table. We wish Troy all the best for the future and thank him for his efforts,” Forest Green chairman Dale Vince told the club’s website, as per Sky Sports.
Following, Deeney’s dismissal, the club’s goalkeeper coach Dan Connor is expected to take up the interim charge. In their next match, relegation-threatened Forest Green will visit Gillingham tonight. Having so far claimed four wins from 26 matches, Forest Green are languishing at the bottom of the standings.
