HINDUPUR: Endowment deputy commissioner (Kurnool), Sagar Babu on Tuesday placed two priests of Lepakshi temple under suspension on charges of violation of rules and dereliction of duties. Based on the report of Prasanna Lakshmi, assistant endowment commissioner, Anantapur, Sagar Babu, issued the orders suspending the two priests Prakash Rao and Lakshmi Narasimha.Following reports in the media that Vidya Ganapathi idol in the sanctum sanctorum of Durga Papeswara Swamy temple at Lepakshi was replaced with a new one, the assistant commissioner conducted an inquiry.Locals alleged that the old deity was replaced with the new one for hidden treasure.The priests, however, denied it. The priests maintained that they installed a new Vinayaka idol as the old one went missing, two years ago. Prasanna Lakshmi said the two priests were suspended for installing a new deity without permission. Locals alleged it was removed for the hidden treasure below it.
