The reverberations of raging protests against the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) were felt in Puducherry also. As many as 375 activists of various human rights organisations and political parties were arrested on Tuesday for staging road blockades and picketing at various key junctions here. The agitators raised slogans against the Tamil Nadu police for their action on the anti-Koodankulum protesters in which one died and several others were injured. They also criticised the police lathicharge on activists at Idinthakarai in Tirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu.
Federation for People’s Rights (FPR), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam (DVK)and Meenava Viduthalai Vengaigal (MVV) were the organisations that took part in the protests.
Addressing the gathering, K Sugumaran of the FPR demanded action against the Tamil Nadu policemen “who resorted to firing and lathicharge on peaceful protestors.” He also demanded the release of all arrested protestors and the withdrawal of cases registered against them.
Sugumaran also urged the Centre to drop the KKNPP project altogether “as it will lead to environmental degradation.”
