Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday ordered setting up of multi-purpose indoor stadia in five districts - Kanyakumari, Tuticorin, Thanjavur, Dindigul and Madurai. Each stadium will be constructed at a cost of Rs 1.50 crore and will be completed in the current financial year.
The Chief Minister had last year announced plans to set up indoor stadia in 20 districts at a cost of Rs 30 crore and Friday’s announcement marks the second phase of implementation of the project.
In the first phase, the Chief Minister had announced that such stadia would be set up in Srirangam, Coimbatore, Villupuram, Kancheepuram and Ariyalur and allocated Rs.7.50 crore towards that. These stadia would have wooden surface, seating facilities for viewers and lighting arrangements.
With the view of producing efficient sportspersons, the government headed by Jayalalithaa has been initiating a number of measures, including establishing playgrounds on par with international standards and hiking sportspersons’ incentives, an official release said.
