New Delhi: #SafeCityPledge was one of the top trending topics in India on Saturday. This was because Blank Noise, a volunteer-led project against street sexual harassment, had initiated a 24 hour tweetahon to push for a change in the way we address the security of women.
The horrific Delhi gangrape incident has brought to the forefront an urgent need for change in the way we address women's security. The onus of a women's safety is often on the woman herself and a movement is on to change that and the #SafeCityPledge tweetathon is a part of the larger agenda for change.
Blank Noise encouraged Internet users to pledge their roles in making their cities safe for women and share it on Twitter with a #SafeCityPledge hashtag and the tweets kept pouring in.
"I pledge to never let the conversation on equality and non-violence die out. If it gets boring, I will find innovative ways. #SafeCityPledge" - @vidyut
"#SafeCityPledge - i'll tell my students - B free; B unafraid ; reach 4 the skies. its your right & demand of the Govt - protect the kids" - @calamur

"Being a #MaleFeminist doesn't mean you mustn't lust. It just means you never act on that lust without her consent #SafeCityPledge" - @zigzackly
Blank Noise asked participants to examine their area of expertise and how they could pledge change within that and urged them "self critical, be optimistic, be hopeful" and to "try avoiding blame game because it often only goes in circles."
