Bengaluru: The water of the famous Varthur Lake in Bengaluru has failed the quality test on 22 parameters. A report on the water quality released on Friday revealed the toxic state of the water. A study by the Indian Institute of Science found high concentrations of heavy metals, oil and grease in the lake.
The IISC team conducted the water analysis after CNN-IBN had reported on heavy foam spilling over from the lake in May. The report states that untreated sewage from nearby apartments and heavy industries is being dumped into the lake - which is also contaminating nearby borewells.
The Karnataka government said that it will take effective steps to clean up the lake. However, there has not been taken any significant action so far.
In April this year, toxic froth from Varthur lake had been spilled all over the nearby roads as reported by the locals. The main reason responsible for polluting Varthur lake were the industrial effluents which are directly dumped into the lake.
