Promoting the idea of decentralised waste management, Cliff House - the official residence of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy - will take to a biogas plant from Gandhi Jayanti day. The plant, set up by Biotech, Centre for Development of Biogas Technology, Vazhuthacaud, will be inaugurated by the CM himself at 9 am on Tuesday.
A press statement from Biotech said that usually cow dung is used to initiate the functioning of biogas plants, but in the one set up at Cliff House, a bacteria culture developed by Biotech will be used. This will help in the longevity of the plant, keeping it efficient and running for a longer period.
The plant has the capacity to treat 5 kilos of degradable waste and 20 litres of waste water daily. This will ensure biogas production equivalent to 1 kilo of LPG and 30 litres of liquid organic manure.
The Cliff House, which has already taken to vegetable cultivation with the help of the Horticulture Department, could very well make use of this manure.
‘’At a time when waste management is in such a crisis, if every household takes to biogas or decentralised waste management system, the problem could be reduced,’’ the statement said.
A five-member family would require setting up of a plant with a capacity of one cubic metre, which will save ` 10,950 on LPG and produce manure worth ` 7,300. The plant costs ` 19,700, of which there is subsidy which could be availed by way of a Central scheme and credit offered by Biotech itself, the statement said.
