BANGALORE: For the last one month, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike’s has been working on it’s project that comprises building a bridge and culvert at KH Road, near the Shanthinagar bus depot. The work that has been in progress for approximately a month has been causing inconvenience to the passersby and the residents living nearby. The BBMP had taken up the project to build a bridge and culvert for better drainage facilities. However, they ended up taking longer. As a result causing problems for the residents and owners of nearby business outlets. For about two to three weeks, the path leading from Sudhamanagar to KH Road had been blocked.Only pedestrians and motorcyclists could pass through the road, but with much difficulties. For the four-wheelers an alternate route was created. At the moment they can manage to squeeze through. With the rains the problem has only worsened. The mud and construction debris left on the road adds to the slush and the mess on the road. The constant rains and the slush has increased the chances on an accident occurring on the road here.Anand runs a small kiosk in the area. He said that since the BBMP worker started the project, his business has seen a dip. ‘‘My business has suffered a loss of almost 50 per cent since the work began.People avoid using this road due to all the work here,” he said.Tanveer, another shopkeeper who sells computer accessories said that the BBMP has been working on the project for over a month now. However, the slow pace of work has caused a lot of problems for everyone in the vicinity. Whenever there is a heavy downpour, the water from the nearby sewage tends to overflow. There have been times when the water has even entered my shop,” he complained. The BBMP workers and contractors who are in the process of building the bridge and culvert gave assurance that the construction work at KH Road will solve the problems of flooding and water logging. However, thanks to the downpour that the city witnessed over the last three days, the work done by the Palike seems to be in question.Mukesh Kumar, a software employee, expressed his confidence in the work undertaken by the civic bodies. He said that the concerned authority were doing their best for the public. “Whatever may be the reason for delay in the progress of work, it is good for the nearby residents when it comes to their future, even if it means that they need to wait for some more days for the work to get completed,’’ he said. The local BBMP corporator of the area D Chandrappa told City Express that he was aware of the delay in the work. He said, “The construction of the bridge began approximately two weeks ago. However, the recent rains have delayed the work to a great extent. As a result we were not able to complete the project. If the weather conditions improve, the work should be over in another week's time.’’ In the meanwhile according to Muni Krishnan, chief engineer for storm water drains, the bridge has been completed and only minor work remains in the area.‘‘The work on the bridge is over. At the moment we are finishing the minor road side work,” he informed.
