Following reports of waste being callously dumped near the Muttar bridge in Kalamassery municipality, the Corporation has warned of strict action against all those who dump waste in the region.
According to health standing committee chairman T K Ashraf, huge lumps of waste are being dumped on a daily basis causing huge trouble to the people living nearby.
“When we conducted a raid at 7 am on Friday, we found owners of four vehicles - two autorickshaws and two bikes - dumping waste at the site. We immediately called up the police who registered a case against them. Also, a fine of `510 was collected from each offender. We will take action against anybody who dares to make the place untidy,” he warned. He said the punishment would be a fine along with the confistication of the vehicle by the police.
According to health inspector M M Suresh, the area under the Muttar Bridge has become a waste dumping yard for people from nearby Thrikkakara and Eloor municipalities.
“The locals here told us that people arrive during night and dispose of waste from their houses. Currently, only the waste collected by Kudumbashree members are allowed to be placed there till morning. The collected waste is then taken to the waste plant by the Corporation trucks.
Earlier, ‘City Express’ had reported about the waste piling up under the Muttar bridge. Meanwhile, the Corporation has intensified its waste removal drive prior to Emerging Kerala. Night squads and afternoon squads will continue to check the waste at collection points around the entire 22 divisions under the Corporation.
“Extra staff have been deployed everywhere so that the city will continue to remain clean for the investors’ meet. We will continue the drive even after the meet,” Ashraf said.
