KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation will continue to extend support to the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (CREDAI) to organise medical camps for the migrant workers. After inaugurating the the medical camp for inter-state migrant construction labourers, organised jointly by CREDAI, Kochi, and the Rotary Club of Cochin at the Puravankara site at Marine Drive on Sunday, Mayor Tony Chammany said the organisations should organise similar camps in future, too.“Apart from organising health camps, the organisations should also support the civic body’s efforts to make sure that the builders are not forcing the workers to stay in unhygienic conditions and and providing basic infrastructure facilities to the migrant labourers,” Chammany said.Nearly 200 construction labourers were examined by a team of doctors at the camp. Joint Labour Commissioner G L Muraleedharan, Kochi Corporation Health Standing Committee chairman T K Ashraf , CREDAI- Kochi president M V Antony and Rotary Club of Cochin president Varkey Pottenkulam were also present. The organisers later said they would organise more medical camps in future too.The plan to organise medical camps came in the wake of the recent raids conducted by the Kochi Corporation on various building sites in the city. In the raids, it was found out that some builders made their workers to stay in unhygienic conditions. The corporation authorities had also made it clear that stringent actions would be taken against the unhealthy practice of forcing the workers to live in sub-human conditions.
