Dehradun DM Poses as Customer to Catch Liquor Shop's Overpricing, Imposes Heavy Fine
During the inspection it was found that the rate list was improperly displayed making rates unclear to customers, shop hours were missing, and employees lacked ID cards

Dehradun has been reeling under the problem of over-pricing of liquor for a long time. This led District Magistrate Savin Bansal to conduct a surprise inspection of liquor shops at the capital city’s old Old Mussoorie Road and Rajpur Road on Wednesday night.

The DM drove to a liquor shop and pretended to be a regular customer. The liquor store employee had no idea that he was selling alcohol over its actual price to the DM. When the identity of the DM came to light, it led to a stir at the liquor store and subsequently, a challan of Rs 50,000 was issued against the shop.

The liquor store employee had charged Rs 680 for a bottle worth Rs 660. Several such irregularities including over-pricing were noticed at the spot following which it was decided to issue a challan against the shopkeeper.

During the inspection, it was found that the rate list was not pasted at the right place. Hence, the customers were not able to see the rates clearly. Moreover, the opening and closing time of the shop was not written anywhere. The liquor shop employees did not have ID cards.

Ever since, IAS officer Savin Bansal took over the post of Dehradun District Magistrate, he has been hitting the headlines for his aggressive style of work. Recently, he conducted a surprise inspection at a government hospital in Dehradun hiding his real identity. After noticing the chaos and disorder at the hospital, he instructed the concerned officials to improve its system.

DM Bansal was also recently spotted on the streets of Doon where he was taking stock of the increasing traffic problem in the city. He was seen riding a bike with SSP Ajay Singh as the pillion rider. He inspected the city on motorcycle for about 10 kilometers from the DM Camp Office at Rajpur Road to Ghantaghar, Paltan Bazaar and Ballupur Chowk.
